I was lucky enough to receive an ARC for this book (keep your eye out for it – it comes out January 26th!) and it was absolutely incredible. Dark and mysterious, it is YA paranormal and horror, recommended to fans of The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. I give it ten stars.
Summary (Goodreads): When seventeen-year-old Breezy Lin wakes up in a shallow grave one year after her death, she doesn’t remember who killed her or why. All she knows is that she’s somehow conscious—and not only that, she’s able to sense who around her is hiding a murderous past. In life, Breezy was always drawn to the elegance of the universe and the mystery of the stars. Now she must set out to find answers and discover what is to become of her in the gritty, dangerous world to which she now belongs—where killers hide in plain sight and a sinister cult is hunting for strange creatures like her. What she finds is at once empowering, redemptive, and dangerous.
Shallow Graves is one of the creepiest books I’ve ever read. It is incredibly well written, full of gripping, detailed and even gruesome descriptions that sucked me into Breezy’s world. I wasn’t able to put it down, and ended up finishing it in a little over a day. Breezy, as well as the other characters, were dark and twisted, but they also had many other sides to them. The good guys are just as bad as the killers, and even the murderers have redeeming qualities. Shallow Graves will make you ask yourself what it really means to be evil. The readers are thrown into the horrifying new world Breezy lives in just as abruptly as she is, and learning each new detail about it is fascinating. I don’t think it’s a series, which is a real shame. Very highly recommended to anyone looking for a story that will keep them up at night, as well as anything that they won’t be able to stop reading. Diverse characters are included.
